Michael, TownsvilleMichael is full-time carer for younger brother George and daughter Tenille and moved back to Townsville, from New South Wales, to care for them after his parents died and they were unable to maintain a rental property. The Torres Strait Islander family spent about a year “doing the hotel shuffle” while receiving on-going support from local organisations and working with the local HSC team. Michael, George and Tenille are now settling in a three-bedroom home in Townsville, one of many ex-National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) properties the Queensland Government has funded the NAHC to buy to boost social housing stock across the state. Leanne, Mountain CreekLeanne’s rent was subsidised as part of the National Rental Affordability Scheme but, with the Federal scheme ending, she faced the prospect her Mountain Creek townhouse would be returned to the private rental market and become unaffordable. Leanne and her son Cameron are able to remain in their home of six years after the Queensland Government funding allowed the National Affordable Housing (NAH) to purchase several townhouses in the complex. Glenda, QueenslandGlenda, a long term NRAS resident, transitioned into a two-bedroom home as her four-bedroom home being underutilised as she was newly widowed. We assisted with her removal costs to ease the financial burden. Glenda is now in her new home and happy she made the transition. The Smith Family - BaysideThe family were offered a property after living in a motel for some months in the Bayside area. The family spoke of their time living in a motel and how confronting it was with being around other people that have had addiction and alcoholism whilst being a parent to children. They said by having this property it has given them the opportunity to connect with established community connections in the area and for their children to continue with the sporting scholarship and working with other families in the home-schooling community |
